This archaeological site north of the city of Valladolid stands out for its uniqueness: small in size and surrounded by walls, in its main pyramid is a stucco frieze - unique in the Mayan world - that represents the jaws of an animal and beings Winged popularly known as angels.

Unlike Chichen Itza, it is still allowed to climb the buildings (impressive view of the complex from the top of the main pyramid. There are also no crowds of visitors and vendors who frequent the main site of the Yucatan.
Ek Balam is an extraordinary archeological zone that has been relatively restored and open to the public for a few years. Perhaps that is why the influx of tourists is less than other archeological sites.

It has two things that give it a plus over other sites. The first is that you can still climb the pyramids and enter all the buildings. The second is the presence of extraordinary friezes made in stucco.

The main buildings that can be seen in the access (the wall, the Mayan Arch, the Oval Palace, the Twins, the stelae and the Ball Game) are beautiful and with a very well-achieved architecture.

But what sets Ek Balam apart from other sites is the last building located in the northern part: the Acropolis. It is 160 meters long, 60 meters wide and 32 meters high (that is, 8 meters higher than the Pyramid of Kukulcán in Chichen Itza.

For all this it is a highly recommended visit that can be completed with that of the nearby cenote of Ek Balam - 1.5 km - in which we can refresh and eat after the archaeological walk.
